Does skin color matter?
We have made great strides in racial equality, but there is still
a problem out there. I here some who insult others based on skin
color, and I see others who consider their skin color to be proof
of their victim status. To both these groups I say this: I do not
what you have endured, but I do not consider the color of skin to
be of any more importance than the color of eyes. It is merely
easier to spot. The important part is the inside, and that I do
judge by. The embittered minority and the race-bashing bigot I
consider ugly people, because what I see coming from their mouths
and their actions are detestible. While it is true that a majority
of the people I know and like are white (offline; online, who knows?),
I do admire some people of other races. A former penpal from
Indonesia, a fellow student who graduated a few years back, an old
high school acquaintance, a graduating student from China. I admire
them for who they are, because they have achieved much, sometimes
outwardly, sometimes a subtle, but powerful inward character. Try to
remember that skin color is merely a few millimeters deep.
